Two women in the hairpin turns of history. The shots of Margaret Bourke-White and Dorothea Lange on display in Milan

Until the March 15, 2020, the Cultural Center of Milan hosts 75 photographs in black and white of two of the greatest photojournalists of the 20th century: Margaret Bourke-White is Dorothea Lange.

A photograph that highlights all the charm and pain of history: from the communities in the biggest system crisis to the depression following the 1929 crisis, from the rise of industrial technology to new aerodynamic discoveries, from the war to the liberation of extermination camps. And yet, the new cities, the birth of modern India, minorities, apartheid. Margaret Bourke-White (New York, 1904 – Stamford, 1971) e Dorothea Lange (Hoboken, 1895 – San Francisco, 1965), photojournalist alongside the most epochal events of the 20th century, are the protagonists of the exhibition Receive the event, staged at the Cultural Center of Milan until the March 15, 2020.

An exhibition created by Camillo Fornasieri and curated by Angela Madesani, made in collaboration with the Culture Department of the Municipality of Milan –In the Municipality’s schedule The talents of women – with the Patronage of the Consulate General of the United States of America in Milan. 75 shots in black and white Original print, and some Vintage print, return the historical events of the twentieth century through the eyes of two legends of photography. Both pupils of the same teacher, Clarence H. White in New York, places of intervention meet in America and the opening of similar photographic studios between east and west coast. United and different in the disease that Dorothea has marked since childhood and Margaret in maturity, at the same origins as the magazine Life (Bourke-White signs the cover of the first issue), by Magnum and the mythical gallery Openings.

There Lange, the first woman to whom N. Y. to touch the social situation, the event and the context. Living life as a vision is a huge undertaking, practically unattainable. I just touched it, just touched it (D. Lange). In Bourke-White social and documentary research on the impacts of capitalism is strong, as is the fascination with the technology of the century. Its themes are symbols of the modern: defeats, grandeur, poverty, humanity, atmospheres. With great compositional and narrative power of the images and clear references to known events.
