Coronavirussuspect case in Naples: a 28-year-old boy of Chinese nationality from the Hubei region whose capital is Wuhan, epicenter of the epidemic outbreak. The patient, who suffers from high fever and other respiratory symptoms, was diagnosed with serious bronchopneumonia. Arriving yesterday morning to the Pilgrims he was detained for about an hour and 45 minutes for the first checks (samples and radiography) after which, in the light of the radiographic response to the chest and in front of the geographical origin, he was immediately transferred, via an equipped ambulance of 118, at the Cotugno hospital in Naples. The clinical protocol, developed by the Region on the recommendation of the Ministry of Health, worked well. Even the ambulance staff, who left the hospital of the sea, wore overalls and protective masks as required by the protocols. The vehicle was then completely drained.

Coronavirus, in Naples suspected case: hospitalized in the 28 year old Chinese Cotugno from Hubei
THE RECOVERY
At Cotugno, a monospecialistic center for infectious diseases and a Campania reference point for the national network, the patient was hospitalized in one of the two high-isolation rooms of the emergency room. Armored stays equipped with special air intake filters to protect personnel. All the swab tests performed so far aimed at identifying viruses that may have caused pneumonia (influenza, Sars, Mars, Coxackie, adenovirus) have given negative results.
THE KITS
The Cotugno is not yet equipped with kits for identifying the coronavirus which instead is available at Spallanzani in Rome where the samples were sent for specific tests. Other samples have been sent to the Higher Institute of Health and today should give the final response. No diagnosis has therefore been made and the case remains for now only a suspicion which must not give rise to any unjustified alarmism. In these hours we are moving on to the verification of bacterial agents.
The young wife of the patient arrived at Cotugno by her own means and, despite the absence of symptoms, was detained and hospitalized as a precaution. They are tourists: the couple is in fact on their honeymoon, in their stay in Naples from 25 January, coming from Rome, where they landed on 21 of this month with a flight from China. The newlyweds stay in a rented Bed & Breakfast in the historic center of Naples. The name and civic coordinates of the reception facility are not known. At the airport in Rome, in the absence of symptoms, the two tourists were surveyed but not detained and the movements made are also unknown for the capital. The spouses would have decided to leave China on 20 January despite the ongoing epidemic to spend their honeymoon in Italy. The two are accompanied by another young Chinese married couple already identified by the ASL and also subjected to preventive health measures.
The President of the Region Vincenzo De Luca promptly summoned the ASL and hospital managers to Palazzo Santa Lucia, centralizing and securing the regional structure for communication and updating of data in close connection with the Ministry of Health. The need to avoid alarmism was confirmed at the meeting. First rule: avoid confusing any symptoms with the full-blown presence of the coronavirus. The picture of the situation in Campania to date is as follows: of the three people hospitalized in Cotugno two are not infected (there is also the Sri Lankan woman hospitalized in recent days who nevertheless had the flu) and for the third there is a investigation in progress that will end tomorrow (today ed).
It is clarified that the presence of the virus requires a whole series of conditions, including the origin from the affected Chinese area which is accompanied by serious symptoms. Cotugno with its task force remains the reference hospital for relevant and non-trivial cases. In every ASL and in hospitals there are structures capable of verifying the patient’s real condition. “Finally, the population is invited to increase flu vaccinations especially in this period when there is a risk of causing an unjustified alarm with unmotivated and useless turnout in the emergency rooms”.
