In the third quarter of 2019, 37% of computers used to collect, process and store biometric data (such as fingerprints, hand, face, voice and iris) suffered at least one attempt at malware infection. This was stated by a survey by the IT security company Kaspersky, conducted on the devices that installed the company's products.

Overall, the company reports, a significant number of conventional malware samples have been blocked, including modern remote access Trojans (5.4%), malware used in phishing attacks (5.1%) , ransomware (1.9%) and Trojan banking (1.5%). The main source of the threats was the internet. These threats were blocked on 14.4% of all biometric data processing systems.
The category in question includes threats blocked on malicious and phishing websites, as well as web-based e-mail services. After the internet, removable media (8%) are the main source of threats for systems that process biometric data, which are among the most used to distribute worms. After infecting a computer, worms commonly download spyware, remote access Trojans and ransomware, and in third place with 6.1% there are threats blocked in e-mail clients."Our research – he said Kirill Kruglov, senior security expert – demonstrates that the current situation regarding biometric data security is critical and must be brought to the attention of industry control authorities, government authorities, the community of computer security experts and users in general ".

To secure its biometric identity, Kaspersky started a collaboration with a 3D accessory designer in Stockholm: together they created a unique ring that can function as an extension of a person's digital identity, designed to keep biometric data safe .
