Innovative intervention at the Mauritian hospital with a robot that treats arrhythmias. For the first time in Italy a 65-year-old patient, suffering from a severe form of ventricular cardiac arrhythmia that could cost him his life with the risk of cardiac arrest, underwent a special procedure. The Stereotaxis robotic system has located arrhythmogenic lesions with an electrical mapping of the heart, using information extracted from cardiac magnetic resonance. The intervention, which lasted 4 hours, was carried out by Dr. Stefano Grossi, in the electrophysiology room of the Cardiology of the Mauritian (directed by Mauro De Benedictis), and is technically successful. There are forms of heart disease in which cardiac lesions that cause arrhythmias and sudden death are hidden in the thickness of the heart and are not visible with traditional methods. Only cardiac MRI can visualize them.
From today, thanks to this technology, these lesions are transferred from the magnetic resonance to the electrical maps used by the electrophysiological cardiologist during the operation. In this way the robot, guided by the cardiologist, is able to reach with extreme precision the diseased cardiac sites, once invisible and to destroy them preventing the onset of new arrhythmias. Cardiac magnetic resonance was performed by Dr. Chiara Lario.
