Iraq, Prime Minister Abdul Mahdi resigns but violence continues
The premier on Friday had presented his resignation and yesterday he convened an emergency meeting to discuss the tasks of the interim government based on the provisions of the Constitution.
In a statement released by his office, we read that Abdul Mahdi "underlined the principle of the peaceful transfer of powers in the democratic system, pointing out that the government has made every effort to respond to the protesters' requests by providing a package of reforms". The president of the Parliament has declared that he will now ask the president Barham Salih to appoint a new prime minister.
Iraq, protests against the government resume: at least 21 dead
Today, too, Pope Francis said he was worried by the situation in Iraq. "I follow with concern the situation in Iraq. I learned with grief that the protests in recent days have received a harsh reaction, which caused dozens of victims," he said, "I pray for the dead and for the wounded; I am close to their families and to the entire Iraqi people, invoking from God peace and concord ".
