Homework, books, movies, chess "I wanted to know more about that child, who is the same age as my son," says Bertola, an architect from the same town as Dawud, Montecchio Maggiore. I discovered that he lived a few meters from my house and that he didn't know the Italian. I proposed to the parents to send him to me: I would have helped him with his homework. At Bertola Dawud's house he saw dvd, ate popcorn, drank chocolate, and most of all bed. He read a lot, from Verne to Salgari, to Jack London, up to Anne Frank and Primo Levi. Bertola taught him to play chess and the boy became a champion: he routed everyone at the local club. He began to study, he learned the Italian language very well, so much so that from elementary school he came out with the highest grades.
Return to Bangladesh and the message on WhatsApp But when Dawud's father realized the boy's "western drift", he took drastic action and sent him back to his home country. "They ruined it – he says -, I didn't recognize him anymore. He even questioned the existence of Allah. So I saved him and his brothers". Now Bertola, the neighbor who had "adopted" him, is worried. The boy disappeared and his Italian friend the last message remained, sent via WhatsApp twenty days ago: "Help me, they told me they were taking me to the doctor and instead they are taking me to Bangladesh." Then the silence.
