A LOWER forward or something that looks like it. Roberto Cingolani, which for 14 years has directed the Italian Institute of Technology (IIT) and which has recently become the Head of technological innovation of Leonardo, announces the foundation of a series of research laboratories and the construction of a super computer in Genoa . Above all, it opens up a department within the former Finmeccanica that will deal with artificial intelligence (Ai).

"It is essential for a company like ours," he explains. "We could develop predictive algorithms for the maintenance of our vehicles, which are extremely complex, such as analyzing the images of our satellites to get a picture of the situation in real time. It will be a structure that, using the super computer, will operate transversely for all the other divisions also pursuing advanced and long-term projects ".

La Leonardo in practice, led by Alessandro Profumo, brings inside an essential piece that was missing before. In August last year the e-Geos, also from the Leonardo group, had begun to use the neural networks of the Californian Orbital Insight to probe the high-resolution images of CosmoSkyMed satellites. The Ai are in fact capable of seeing what it is difficult for us to find with the naked eye: from counting the construction of new houses, to the extension and state of the roads, up to the number of vehicles circulating in certain areas, to the industrial structures, state of the territory and cultivation.

The architecture of the new super computer has not yet been defined but there is talk of a machine with at least 20 petabytes of memory and some petaflops in terms of computing power (billions of floating point operations per second). Powerful therefore but not from all points of view. Super computers competing for the fastest podiums in the world have characteristics that are superior in some ways. Consequently it is also distant from computer in construction to the Tecnopolo of Bologna, than for other it is called Leonardo, equipped of 270 petaflops.

In general, however, beyond the power, it is the overall operation that counts. The calculator is added to the Leonardo Labs, research facilities that will be built near the main industrial sites of the company in Italy, from Turin to Naples, passing through Rome, with the aim of facilitating technology transfer in production. "Autonomous driving, electrification of engines, new materials, structures, are some of the areas that will be dealt with", concludes Cingolani, who then points out: "We are moving towards the digitalisation of the company, a trend that I have certainly not invented in the world" . Indeed not, the problem which not everyone then puts into practice.
