The Finnish Prime Minister, Antti Rinne, who has been in office since last June, resigned on Tuesday after the allies of the Center Party had withdrawn his trust, accusing him of having mishandled a strike by postal workers in recent weeks. The consultations for the formation of a new government will begin next week, but as he said the same Rinne will probably be supported by the same majority, as hoped during the crisis by the president of the Center Party Katri Kulmuni.

The Finnish post strike had begun more than two weeks ago, and was then extended to employees of the Finnair flag airline and other sectors. Already a few days ago he had caused the resignation of the Minister of Poste Sirpa Paatero: the postal service had presented a plan to make new contracts with lower salaries to about 700 employees, and the Finnish government had gotten into trouble because it knew nothing about it.

Transport Minister Sanna Marin, 34 and social democrat like Rinne, is considered one of the favorites for the post of new first minister. Until the end of the year Finland presides over the Council of the European Union, an important position that could be complicated by the crisis of government.
