Evo Morales he left Mexico. He wants to go to Argentina to stay closer to his country. Sounds easy. After all he was the president of Bolivia for 13 years (2006-2019). For better or for worse. He would have at least basic human rights, as well as political rights, to continue being the leader of the opposition. His past role should guarantee him immunity. It is granted to the worst dictators, to men who are guilty of serious crimes, massacres, indiscriminate repression, mass imprisonment. It is not so. No one, even internationally, has accused him of these crimes. The indigenous leader is forced to flee, to hide, to be protected.

The rival, the rebel and the deputy three faces for the new Bolivia

In the month he just spent in Mexico he stayed in an army barracks and only went to a private house in the last few days. He was not under arrest. President Obrador wanted to guarantee him safety. Which makes him realize that he can't do if he leaves the country. The exit from Mexico is complicated, dangerous. His life is at risk, intelligence and diplomatic circles openly say so. Who wants him in prison is the new right-wing government of Bolivia. In La Paz there is a climate of revenge, almost of revenge. The change was violent, surrounded by a religious fury, with rosaries and the Bible used as symbols of the new course. The white and wealthy class rebelled against the indigenous and peasant class. Ethnic and social differences have resurfaced. All in the name of democracy.

Bolivia, President Morales announces his resignation and leaves La Paz

To stop the dissent, the interim president, Jeanine Anes, gave the military free hand. They could shoot without paying the consequences. It took one day and 38 protesters were killed in Cochabamba. Only then did the new head of state decide to revoke the decree. Now he accuses Morales of "betrayal, electoral fraud and corruption". Two days after taking power he warned the former president: "If he returns to Bolivia he will end up in court, he has to answer for many crimes". Morales disputes the charges. He would also be willing to return and face a judgment. How he was prepared, after the cancellation of the presidential elections, to repeat the consultations and to renounce his candidacy. But with the military breakthrough and the army that sided with the opposition he had no choice. He fled in the evening, surrounded by soldiers who wanted to arrest him, with Mas militants trying to protect him. On a plane sent from Mexico that was denied to pass over Peru and Paraguay and that only thanks to the intervention of the Brazilian ambassador in Bolivia was able to fly over the borders of all the neighboring countries, reach Ecuador, fold immediately on the Pacific and finally reach Mexico.

Now the same thing happens. Morales has decided to go to Cuba. But it is only a stop. His final goal is Argentina, to be closer to the leaders of his party who are in opposition and orphans of the leader. He aimed to assist in the establishment of Alberto Fernandez. The new president's advisers dissuaded him. Better to arrive later, when the center-left candidate will take power. Until that moment, Mauricio Macri still wants to avoid political and diplomatic tensions with neighboring Bolivia.

It is not yet clear how and when he will reach Buenos Aires. His position as a refugee with asylum obliges him to always pass by Mexico and fly on an airliner. His Vice President Alvaro Garcia Linera and Health Minister Gabriela Montano will accompany him. They all got asylum in Mexico where they were protected and received job offers. But in Argentina it is different. Bolivia is one step away. Security is not guaranteed.
