Bernadette Fox (Cate Blanchett) is a legend in the field of architecture, but has long since stopped working and has retired to private life. It is not an easy type: in fact, behind its goggles it conceals a complex and at times unfriendly personality. One day daughter Bee (Emma Nelson) asks for a trip to Antarctica as a reward for the perfect report card.
Bernadette heroically throws herself into the preparations, but is now consumed by the effort to adapt to a life that does not resemble her at all and in which she does not find herself. Unable to manage obstacles and disasters of everyday life, she abandons preparations and indulges her instinct to escape, disappearing suddenly and leaving her husband (Billy Crudup) and his daughter the task of collecting the pieces.
