ROME – Mourning in the world of football. Giovanni Bertini, a former defender who during the 1970s, dressed in the Rome, Arezzo, Taranto, Ascoli, Fiorentina and Catania shirts (the team he had played the most with, collecting 84 presences) before closing his career, in 1982, in Benevento. Imposing physique and exuberant character, born in January '51, in Bertini, called "Giovannone", he was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis in June 2016. After his career as a footballer he distinguished himself as a television commentator on TV2000 and in various broadcasters of Lazio.

Another soccer player who dies for SLA

Bertini was one of the 32 professional players who, from the 60s to the present (Borgonovo and Signorini the most famous), contracted evil. A scientific study carried out in recent months by the Mario Negri Institute in Milan has shown that in the world of soccer, patients with ALS are 6 times more than the general population. ALS is a degenerative disease that attacks the central nervous system leading to the loss of vital functions such as walking, breathing, swallowing and talking. Many contributing factors, starting from a genetic predisposition. The study showed that among the triggers there could be repeated traumas and the excessive use of anti-inflammatories.

The many sick in the Florentine 70s

Once again a player who played for Fiorentina went away, one of the teams, along with Cesena, Sampdoria and Como, was accused more for the abuse, in that period, of two medicines: the Micoren and the Cortex: the first is an adjuvant in states of respiratory fatigue, the second increases muscle capacity. Long list of those who left: Armando Segato, in 1973 for Sla, Bruno Beatrice in 1987 for leukemia, Nello Saltutti in 2003 because of a heart attack, Ugo Ferrante in 2004 for tonsil cancer, Giuseppe Longoni in 2006 for cardiac vasculopathy, Massimo Mattolini in 2009 for renal failure, Giancarlo Galdiolo in 2018 for temporal frontal dementia (similar to ALS). To these we must add Adriano Lombardi (he worked in the viola youths before serving as military in A with Como and Avellino) who died in 2007 of SLA and Mario Sforzi (two seasons in the purple youth sector) who died of lymphoma. Other purple players of that period then had several other health problems: Antognoni was the victim of a heart attack in 2004, Domenico Caso was hit in '95 by a liver tumor from which he recovered and Giancarlo De Sisti underwent brain surgery to a frontal abscess.

The condolences of Rome

Roma, who in December 2016, already ill, had hosted him in the field during a league match against Chievo, mourns him via Twitter: "AS Roma mourns the death of Giovanni Bertini, a defender who wore the Giallorossi jersey among 1969 and 1974. The family's condolences go to the club ".
