At least one person died due to the eruption of a volcano in New Zealand

On Monday in New Zealand at least one person died as a result of the eruption of the White Island volcano, located on the eponymous volcanic island, about 48 km from the North Island. According to local authorities, at the time of the eruption there were about 50 people on the island: of these, 23 were rescued, while there are still no news of the others. The White Island volcano, also known by the Maori name of Whakaari, is one of the most active in the country, but despite this it continues to be a popular tourist destination. In the images of the webcam that shows the activity of the volcano in real time, we see a group of people inside the crater a few seconds before the eruption. The first minister Jacinda Ardern said that the police immediately started the rescue operations, made however particularly difficult by the large quantity of ash on the island.
