The painting reproduced above is a work of the Venetian artist Vincenzo Chilone (1758-1839). It depicts, as the caption of the auction house website explains Sotheby's, Piazza San Marco flooded. From some elements of the picture (the Austrian flags and a later demolished building) the scene can be dated to December 9th 1825 when the gazettes of the time register strong high water. According to Sotheby's experts, le gondolas adorned show that the floods were an opportunity for fun. Excessive phrase; but it is a fact that the phenomena of these days are not unique in history.
