VENICE. He had realized that it was an exceptional high water, but he never thought his stainless steel kiosk would be dragged away by the record-breaking Tuesday night tide. The history of the Venetian newsagent, which literally lost its job in a few hours, sparked a solidarity contest on Gofundme.com to buy a new gazebo.

Walter, you have a historic newsstand at the Zattere, in front of the Giudecca canal. Where is it now?
"I don't know, there isn't any more. I went to file a complaint with the carabinieri and I notified the fire brigade, but I don't have the slightest idea where it could be".When did you last see it?
"Tuesday at 10 pm, when I was arranging the last things. In a very short time I found myself inside the kiosk in the eye of a cyclone. The wind blew in all directions and the newsstand, in stainless steel, was trembling."
He was scared?
"For a moment I thought I would fly away. I saw the water grow too fast, with very high waves. One must think that the Fondamenta delle Zattere are in front of the Giudecca Canal and therefore are not sheltered by buildings or other streets. I did everything I could to make everything safe, but then I returned home to Giudecca. That was the last time I saw her. "
Can you tell us what you had done before?
"Of course, on Tuesday I set up magazines, newspapers and what I kept at the top, predicting that the water would reach 140 centimeters high, as expected. I fixed everything and went home to Giudecca, the island that is in front of the Rafts. On 20.30 I heard that the forecasts changed and gave 160 centimeters and I thought it was better to go and check. I took the vaporetto and crossed the Giudecca canal. "
How did the water look at that moment?
"It didn't seem dangerous to me, in the sense that it didn't seem like there was as much wind as it came after. On 21.40 I instead realized that something was happening because the tide has grown with power and speed of 30 centimeters, in a short time and everything has changed".
What happened?
"I suddenly found myself in the midst of a real storm, with a wind that seemed to whip the newsstand on every side. Everyone danced and trembled and I felt myself in the middle of the eye of the storm. At that point I thought it was better to close everything and go home. Fortunately, I found an Alilaguna who took me to Giudecca about 10 pm and I stayed at home until the tide started to fall ".
What did you see?
"Eh actually what I didn't see …. When I went out on one and a half to take the vaporetto and cross the canal I realized that there was no more the newsstand. There wasn't really any more and you couldn't even see "around, maybe dragged somewhere. I was shocked and still am. It was a stainless steel kiosk, so it means that the strength of the tide has been so powerful that it has been eradicated."
How does she feel?
"I must say that I received so many phone calls and demonstrations of affection that they made me feel surrounded by very nice people, but what happened upset me because I never saw such high water. Now I think that fortunately I left otherwise the tide would have taken away me too ".
