THE INVESTIGATION on the principals of the murder of the Maltese journalist Daphne Caruana Galicia it is perhaps at a decisive point. Where the "maybe" is a mandatory precaution in a story where nothing, from the beginning, from the car bomb that killed Daphne on October 16, 2017 immediately after leaving the house, has never enjoyed a decent degree of transparency and linearity.In fact, it happened that yesterday, six days after the arrest (on Thursday November 14th), the premier Joseph Muscat raised the secret of the arrest of a man who indicated the instigators of the murder. Or that, however, has provided objective elements that allow identifying them beyond any reasonable doubt.

And it is the man who, between summer and autumn of 2017, personally entrusted the brothers Alfred and George De Giorgio it's at Vincent Muscat (the perpetrators of the murder, in prison since December 2017 and waiting for a process that has yet to begin) the task of eliminating Daphne, also negotiating the price, the methods and the timing of the execution.

The Prime Minister explained that he had signed on his own initiative (and thus excluding his council of ministers, where opinions would not be unanimous) a letter asking the President of the Maltese Republic for a pardon for the taxi driver (on closer inspection also something plus: a pardon for all the crimes he committed), subjecting it to a condition. That the confession, which the man has already made after his arrest in two different informal interrogations (Thursday 14 and Saturday 16 November) and reiterated last night in a third formal interrogation, is not only confirmed in court, but actually allows to collect decisive evidence on the instigators of the murder.

Melvin Theuma was arrested on Thursday last week along with eight other people (some of whom were already arrested in December 2017 during the raid that led to the arrests of the De Giorgio brothers and Vincent Muscat) in a formally anti-money laundering operation conducted with Europol that in actually he had to cover the real reasons for the arrest. The Maltese police already knew all about him. And for a long time. Long since. Since his name had been indicated by one of the three perpetrators of the murder, Vincent Muscat, as the one who had commissioned the execution of Daphne.

That information, even this one in a decisive way, had remained secret for many months. Not to risk the life of Vincent Muscat and the integrity of the inquiry. At least until, a month ago, even Vincent Muscat had not asked, through his lawyer, to be able to exchange his first confession (the indication of Theuma's role) with a grace. That hasn't arrived yet.

It is a fact that, for months, that information provided by Vincent Muscat becomes valuable for the investigation. Theuma, who by profession seems to do much more than the taxi driver – he is the owner of six car dealers and lends money to a throttle – is in fact followed, listened to. Until, precisely, it is not decided to arrest him so that he can be seized cell phones and PCs which, in the hands of Europol technicians, allow him to acquire decisive forensic evidence capable of tightening on the principals. But precisely, there is no need. Once in jail, Theuma, in the course of two informal police interrogations, collaborates.

He even asks to be defended by Daphne's family lawyer, Jason Azzopardi (which is not allowed because it is incompatible). And, last Saturday, he is released, while a new arrest warrant is prepared for him, this time for murder, which is carried out earlier this week. Now it's up to the mandans, then. On whose identity Theuma has already said and on which, probably, the secret will resist for a short while. Also because, on the island of only 450 thousand souls, it is now a secret of Pulcinella.
