Ruini is not just any retired cardinal. He was the powerful president of the Italian episcopate for almost two decades John Paul II is Benedict XVI. The Catholic historian Pietro Scoppola he claimed that his real mission was to be a "party secretary". He himself never denied his taste for politics. Ruini still inspires respect and "speaks to the belly" of a part of the episcopate, comments a Vatican leader.
It is therefore not to underestimate in any way his decision to go down so heavily in the field against the ideal "guidelines" of Pope Bergoglio on the subject of sovereignty, which incites the xenophobia and manipulates religious symbols. For the traditional code of behavior of the ecclesiastical hierarchy, its positioning against the Pope's line – embodied in Italy in the CEI by Cardinal Bassetti, the current president of the episcopate – is unthinkable.
Imagine if at the time of the referendum for assisted procreation, when Ruini launched the CEI on the line ofabstentionism (to make the consultation fail) if a former president of the CEI had given an interview to support the exact opposite. Unthinkable. Just as until yesterday it would have seemed unimaginable that an Italian cardinal a hundred meters from the apostolic palace launched the gauntlet to Francesco, who repeatedly warned of everything that smells like totalitarianism, with an interview in which the word "xenophobia" never appears and it is never stated that one cannot kiss the cross while shouting "the bulldozer for Roma camps".
Ruini's move reinforces the impression that the autumn of 2019 is bringing the pontificate of Bergoglio towards a season of chaos. The scandal of the Vatican's reckless investments for hundreds of millions of euros. Unconscious financial maneuvers (in the best case scenario). The unclear resignation imposed on the commander of the Vatican gendarmerie, Domenico Giani. The clash between the former Cardinal Substitute Giovanni Angelo Becciu and the Cardinal Secretary of State Pietro Parolin, which defines the Vatican property operation on the London square as "rather opaque".
And – clash over confrontation – the frontal opposition between the Vatican anti-money laundering authority (AIF) and the investigating magistracy of Oltretevere, which investigates the AIF director Tommaso Di Ruzza, to which the colleagues of the authority have expressed total trust.
Meanwhile, a small hand opened the drawers and released a secret document from the Economy Council, which denounces a deficit unsustainable for the Holy See. Literally: "The recurring and structural deficit has reached worrying levels and risks leading to a default in the absence of urgent interventions ". Other documents follow on obscure pages of Oltretevere's finances.
And we come to the last (for now) revelation. Touch the Orlandi case. The former nuncio Carlo Maria Viganò suddenly feels the impulse to communicate urbi et orbi that just disappeared Emanuela Orlandi, a stranger called to the Vatican leaving a sensational communication: Emanuela had been kidnapped and "her release was linked to one request, whose fulfillment did not necessarily depend on the will of the Holy See. It was a message formulated in precise and well-constructed terms ".
Viganò, in the interview to the blog of a friendly journalist, throws there: "(The transcript of the call) must be in the archive of the Secretariat of State and I do not know if it was ever given to Italian investigators. I would be surprised that it had not been done ". And those who want to understand at the top of the Vatican site, understand … But the most singular thing is that, when asked about the kidnappers' requests, the former nuncio affirms: "Unfortunately, the memory does not assist me on the precise content of that document ".
Public opinion is not so naive. If he raised concerns about Pope Bergoglio's response to the Mexican journalist Valentina Alazraki, when he said he could not remember whether in his meeting with Viganò after the election he spoke of the case or not McCarrick, it is totally unbelievable that Viganò, with all the clamor that the Orlandi case raised at national and international level, does not remember what kind of ransom the supposed kidnappers had asked for.
This is the landscape. Groups and clans move disorderly in this second half of the Bergoglia pontificate. A wind of insinuations blows in the corridors. The intent of some is to show that the government works badly. Whether it's true or not, it doesn't even count. The important thing is to spread the feeling. In this climate Ruini launches another tough one warning to Francis: "I hope and pray that the Pope will not confirm" the requests of the Amazonian bishops to establish married priests, choosing them from permanent deacons. "It is a wrong choice". From today, the Italian ecclesial-political opposition to the pontiff has its point of reference.
