LONDON – I am the last British colony in Africa. A UN resolution required the UK to return it to its rightful inhabitants by yesterday. "The Chagos Islands have been ours since 1801 and we will keep them," the Foreign Ministry in London replies contemptuously. But the December 12 elections could change things: if he becomes prime minister, Jeremy Corbyn promises to "repair one of the worst wrongs in history".The Labor leader announced this morning during a stage of his election campaign. "I have been involved for years in the struggle to decolonize the Chagos and I will not hold back if I win the election," says Corbyn. A position clearly different from that of the current government led by Boris Johnson and all those who preceded him.
Part of the British Empire for two centuries, the Chagos are a remote, small and sparsely populated archipelago in the Indian Ocean. The nearest nation is the Mauritius islands, which claim ownership of the Chagos. One of whose islands, Diego Garcia, has been home to an American air force base in the 1960s where strategic bombers are installed and which has been used for rendition flights, the controversial clandestine transfer of suspected terrorists. For this reason Britain has deported the entire population and forbids their return, in violation of UN resolutions. And for the same reason he refuses to give up the last vestige of his colonial past in Africa. But all this could change if Jeremy Corbyn conquers Downing Street.
