"Alberto is sick, we must be strong". Now it is Andrea who shakes hands with father Franco. The speech is uncertain but the grip is tight and this is what is needed at the moment, in the scenario that leaves the death by road accident of an 18-year-old girl, after a dangerous and unconscious night. Mestre Hospital, intensive care waiting room: an autistic child tries to cheer up his father with his face sunk in his hands. It's always them, the protagonists of the story that inspired a book and even a film, the entrepreneur dad who drops everything to be close to his son with autism. "How can a 19-year-old boy be labeled as a criminal for a rod? How can you forget all the good he has done up to now for a mistake, for a stroke of sleep?", Franco Antonello desperate, 24 hours after the tragedy that breaks into this modern fairy tale with a car accident involving the other son, the nineteen year old Alberto. On Halloween night the police stopped him in the car in the province of Venice with six people on board and a small dose of hashish in his pocket. He is a novice driver, they take his license away. Instead of going home, use the temporary driving permit to go to the King's discotheque in Jesolo with 18-year-old girlfriend Giulia Zandarin. They dance until dawn and, on the way back, they crash into a tree. She dies, he ends up in a coma. They find it positive for alcohol with 0.76. "People now judge, criticize, condemn" their father vents, while waiting for the medical bulletin. "So I ask you a question: do you think that death is not enough punishment for us too? Giulia was part of our family. She had lived with Alberto for a few months, they were there a few meters from my house, beautiful and happy."
Franco Antonello, entrepreneur from Castelfranco Veneto, long hair, unkempt beard, brazen air that hides a big heart. His smile and that of his 26-year-old son Andrea, in the days of the unforgettable crossing of the United States on a motorbike, inspired Fulvio Ervas's novel. If I embrace you, don't be afraid and Gabriele Salvatores's film All my crazy love, with Claudio Santamaria and Valeria Golino. Now it's as if the roles were reversed. Andrea sees the suffering of his father, he understands it, he tries to alleviate it with hugs, even when broken, at any moment.
"I saw Alberto on Thursday night," recalls Franco. "We hugged each other, he told me: quiet daddy, I go slow. He and Giulia were engaged, they came out like so many other boys of their age do and this tragedy happened. Do we really want to judge this?".It is not easy to pretend nothing happened in the face of criticism and judgments that, in the era of social media, also come at the moment of pain. "For a half gram of grass, a boy who has made a mistake is thrown from the precipice. Fatal, of course, and time will never be able to erase this pain. But it is still a mistake. I would like to perceive a spirit of support, I wish the people used their energies to help and not to demolish, I would like those who know us to realize that it is always us, that we have not changed. Up until two days ago we were a family full of values. Now we cannot have become criminals ". If there is a fault that Franco Antonello takes on, it is that he has always diverted most of his energy towards the other child, the one caged in the inability to communicate. "Alberto has always suffered the diversity of his brother, he was ashamed" confessed the parent. "But now everything had changed, my heart was filled with satisfaction in seeing them finally united as two brothers should be. Today, this is the only certainty: from such great pain we can only get out together".
