From an often dramatic event to a statistical one: the Aci has elaborated the numbers related to the incidents happened in Italy last year, drawing up a little honorable ranking of the most dangerous roads.
The map that emerges from the study on the "Localization of road accidents 2018" meanwhile identifies as su 100 accidents, 76 accidents occur on urban roads, 18 on extra-urban roads and 6 on motorways.
More in detail, the number of accidents on the highway appears to be stable in 2018, but the number of deaths increases (we recall that in this sad case history also includes the victims of the collapse of the Ponte Morandi in Genoa), while on the extraurban roads claims are increasing even if the number of deaths remains stable (respectively, + 4% and -0.7%) , while in urban centers both accidents and deaths decrease (-2.7% and -4.2%), especially with regard to small towns crossed by extra-urban roads.
The study analyzed 37,228 accidents (1,166 fatal), 1,344 deaths and 59,853 wounded, recorded on approximately 55,000 kilometers of roads of the main Italian road network.
Taking the 2010 season as a reference, the accidents decreased by 19.4% and the deaths by 18.2%; compared to 2017, however, accidents have increased by 1.5% (554 more) and deaths decreased by 1.6% (22 less).
June and July are the months with the highest accidents (9.9% and 10.4% of the total), while Friday is confirmed the day on which more accidents occur, equal to 15.4% of the total, with the time span between 18 and 20 as the most critical.
On the motorway, goods transport vehicles – even light, lorry or articulated lorries – are involved in 31% of accidents, and urban highways have the highest density of accidents due to the high traffic flows and the plurality of different means.
In fact I am the Urban penetration of the A24 in Rome (with 12.9 accidents per km), the Reggio Calabria junction (12.5 accidents / km) and the Milan north ring road in the stretch in the province of Monza (10.3 accidents / km) the arteries on which they occur most accidents, while for the motorway network the national average is 1.3 accidents / km.
For extraurban roads, where the national average is 0.6 accidents / km, the little honorable record belongs to the State Road 36 of Lake Como and Spluga in the sections in the province of Monza and Brianza (9.8 accidents / km) and in the province of Milan (7.6 accidents / km), together with the SS131 dir – Carlo Felice in the province of Cagliari (8.6 accidents / km) .
Not all the news, however, is negative: the ACI dossier, in fact, shows compared to 2018, several roads in which accidents have significantly decreased; in particular, SS 7 quater Domiziana, SS 69 of Val d'Arno, SS 325 of Val di Setta and Val di Bisenzio, SS 222 Chiantigiana, SS 229 of Lake Orta, SS 513 of Val d'Enza and the Tangenziale Nord Citta di Bologna (Casalecchio-Aeroporto-San Lazzaro).
Beware of motorcycles, bicycles and pedestrians
Particular attention is given to the category that brings together the users defined as "vulnerable", which are due to their characteristics more exposed to serious or very serious damage as a result of accidents.
Well, on extraurban roads, vulnerable users represent a very high proportion of deaths, although down compared to last year: 31% (1 death out of 3) is a cyclist, "duer-hutist" or pedestrian.
In 20.6% of cases a motorcyclist has died (277), in 10.2% a pedestrian (137) and in 3% a cyclist (39), while compared to the total of deaths by mode of transport, pedestrians are 22.4%, cyclists 17.8 % and "dueruotists" 34.8%.
Two-wheeled vehicles (including bicycles) are involved in 22% of road accidents and the mortality rate of the two wheels (motorcycles and bicycles) is much higher than the four wheels: more than 3.6 deaths per 100 vehicles involved in the accident, compared to 1.3 in the cars.
At the top of the most dangerous sections for the two wheels there are the SS 001 Aurelia in Liguria, the Grande Raccordo Anulare of Rome, the SS 145 Sorrentina in the province of Naples, the SS 249 Gardesana Orientale in the province of Verona, the SS 114 eastern Sicula in the province of Messina.
