Reggio Calabria, among the containers of hidden bananas 1200 kg of cocaine: record seizure in Gioia Tauro

One ton and 200 kilos of pure cocaine hidden inside a container of bananas. The port of Gioia Tauro it is confirmed as one of the main airports that the ‘ndrangheta uses for international drug trafficking. The maxi-seizure took place on Monday morning when the police of Reggio Calabria, together with the soldiers of the Ros and the finance guard, discovered 1176 kilos of cocaine hidden in 144 packages hidden in a refrigerated container used for transporting bananas. The cargo, departed from South America and landed at Gioia Tauro, was headed into Germany.

It is not excluded that if cocaine had not been discovered, it would have been recovered by someone inside the Calabrian port before the container left for northern Europe. At that point the men of the gang would have put it on the market and the cocaine would have yielded over 250 million euros to traffickers. The operation, coordinated by the Reggio Calabria prosecutor, Giovanni Bombardieri, officials from Europol and the Customs Agency participated.
