The film, whose original title is J'accuse, is directed by Roman Polański, but even Robert Harris himself worked on the co-writing of the film adaptation.

J'accuse it was also the title of a very famous pamphlet of Émile Zola in 1989. It was a sort of open letter to the president of the French Republic Felix Faure, in which the writer publicly denounced the unjust persecution suffered by Dreyfus. Georges Picquart is an officer in the French army. We are in 1895, the year has started very little, because the story takes place in January.

George's life changes forever when one day, in the courtyard of the École Militaire in Paris, the man must attend the public condemnation of Alfred Dreyfus, a Jewish captain accused of spying, high treason and to be an informant of the German enemies. Dreyfus will also suffer humiliating degradation, but the heaviest punishment will be imposed for delivering military secrets to the German Empire. A day's work like another would seem, for Georges, who is promoted to Head of the Statistics Section.

But once the case is filed and Dreyfus confined in exile on the island of the Devil, in French Guiana Picquart begins to have suspicions within the unit in which he now works, the same as the military counterespionage that had mounted the charges against Dreyfus. After a series of investigations and checks, Picquart discovers that Dreyfus is actually innocent. But what can a man do against the powerful?
