VALENCIA – The illusion of being able to conquer at least the second row, has clashed with one wrong strategy: Valentino Rossi does not openly accuse his box, but he does understand it.
By now, there is no longer a relationship of trust. This is just a hypothesis, the certainty is that Rossi will have to chase from the fourth row, without having the pace to make a great comeback.
"In the FP3 I was fast, despite the cold I managed to make a good lap and hit the target of entering Q2 directly. In the afternoon we worked for the race, but in Q2 we went wrong, we didn't work well, we did not work well, wrong strategy : with the second tire I found myself in traffic.
My potential was better, so, starting from the fourth row it will be hard: it is not easy to overcome here. And my pace is not bad, but it's not even fantastic. You need to choose the right tire and be fast in the first few laps ".
What was the mistake in qualifying?
"Try to make a strategy to choose the right moment to enter the track, but you must also be lucky and I have not been lucky: I found Pol Espargaro going slow. However, we say that we are not fantastic in strategy, in 2020 we must improve in this respect ".
Are you motivated for this GP?
"Yes, I am, I would like to finish well, because the last GP always leaves you with a particular taste throughout the winter. Unfortunately yesterday I made two mistakes, today we could have done better in qualifying: starting one or two rows later can change the race".
In 2015, however, you came fourth, starting last: you can overcome on this track.
"Yes, but for us, with the bike so slow in a straight line, it is difficult to do it. And then in 2015 I had the pace to be fast, today I don't have it".
In FP4 you stayed on the track for a long time without making changes to the bike: is it a new strategy or was it a special circumstance?
"I wanted to try the last hard, but when I could stop it I only had 8 minutes left and I decided to stay on track."
There seems to be a chance that Alex Marquez will go to Honda: what do you think?
"He is the Moto2 world champion: if he runs in HRC he will not steal anything from anyone".
What were the positive and negative aspects of this season?
"For me it was a difficult season, I expected to be faster. I was in difficulty especially in the middle of the year, then I came back more competitive, but I never got on the podium: I went close, but I never went I believe however that it was an important season for Yamaha: in 2017 and 2018 we had lost competitiveness compared to our rivals, but in 2019 the M1 improved, it is the first step to return to the top: there is more optimism for the future".
