They are a symbol of Modica. Almost the sentinels of the Cathedral of St. Peter in the historic center of the city. The statues of the apostles are the favorite subjects of the tourists who pass along that stretch of Corso Umberto. But they would need a restoration that brings those statues back to the ancient splendor of the stone, now covered with a dark patina due to time and smog. Some years ago a regional parliamentarian from Ragusa, the Honorable Nello Dipasquale, had promised to commit himself to a law – similar to that for Ibla – to be allocated to the cities of the Val di Noto: money that would also have been used for interventions of this type, not only for Modica but also for Scicli, Ispica, Pozzallo, Noto .. Evidently he has forgotten it, perhaps committed to refinance the Ibla law for the thirty-eighth consecutive year. Things that happen when the easy promises to gather support should be turned to the facts. And so, the restoration of the statues of the apostles must be borne by the Municipality or the Superintendency. It is to be hoped that someone takes the problem to heart and that the statues on the steps of the Cathedral of St. Peter can receive the necessary care.
