The episode happened around 6pm and shortly thereafter the police stopped Cianci with a blood-stained knife still in his pocket. According to the first reconstruction provided by the police, Cianci allegedly injured the stranger during a robbery.
What happened on that tragic night 40 years ago. Antonio Cianci, the 60-year-old prisoner who was arrested today by the police in Milan because, on premium leave, he stabbed an elder at the throat for a robbery, he was 20 years old when in the night between 8 and 9 October of '79 he killed three carabinieri who had stopped him at a checkpoint between Liscate and Melzo, in the Milanese area, in a stolen car.
While the soldiers controlled one of his documents that night, the young man fired killing the marshal Michele Campagnuolo, the pointed Pietro Lia and the carabiniere Federico Tempini. When Cianci, a native of Cerignola (Foggia), was arrested, he did not confess and said, on the contrary, that some soldiers in a car had been shot at the Melzo station soldiers. At the first instance trial he was sentenced to life imprisonment, confirmed on appeal in 1983 (a process in which he finally confessed the massacre to a letter to the judges) and then also to the Cassation Court. He was detained in Bollate and, from what was known, he had obtained a one-day award.
