Immediately after the landing in Taranto, the two Central Africans were indicated by some traveling companions as the boat's drivers, who were the only ones in possession of a compass and a cell phone which, then, was used to call for help.

The two were also equipped with a knife and a stick to use against the compatriots on the boat if the need arose. Upon arrival of the rescue, they would also attempt to camouflage themselves among the other immigrants, ordering their traveling companions not to report what their role was during the navigation.

It was possible to ascertain that the two detainees would have gained an economic advantage from the collaboration offered to foreign criminal organizations that profit from human trafficking: they would not have paid, in fact, the quota foreseen for the crossing, equal to 2 thousand Libyan dinars, requested to get on board. The adult was accompanied to prison while the presumed minor, already transferred to a reception center, was reported to the Public Prosecutor of the Juvenile Court.
