PALERMO – Three people were arrested as part of an inquiry by the Palermo district attorney's office on an association aimed at international drug trafficking that operated under the aegis of the Sicilian Cosa Nostra and in the shadow of fugitive Matteo Messina Denaro.

The detention order in prison issued by the magistrate was carried out by police officers of the Ros and of the provincial command of Trapani and by soldiers of the Gico of the economic-financial police unit of the Palermo finance guard. Dozens of searches are under way throughout the country, with more than 100 soldiers of the Weapon and Yellow Flames, supported by canine units, being employed, and concerning homes and places available to suspects.

The arrested I am the former lawyer Antonio Messina, 73, who now lived in Bologna, under house arrest for reasons of age; Giacomo Tamburello, aged 59, and Nicolò Mistretta, 64, are in jail. They are all from Campobello di Mazara and have numerous precedents for drug trafficking. According to investigators, they imported large quantities of hashish on the Morocco-Spain-Italy route.

Numerous seizures have been made since 2013: in particular over 240 kilograms of drugs, destined to the Milanese squares of the store, were intercepted in Carate Brianza; another 180-pound "consignment" was sold to customers of Calabrian origin, while a load of sixty kilos was seized in 2015 in Tuscany. The sale of the drug would have earned about 1.5 million euros on the retail market.

The fugitive boss Matteo Messina Denaro, indicated simply as "Iddu", it could have been accompanied to the station of Trapani on board a Mercedes by one of his assistants. The detail emerges from the investigation by the DDA of Palermo which led to the arrest of the three alleged drug dealers. Investigators have intercepted lawyer Antonio Messina, an elderly Freemason who had been dismissed from the register for his precedents, while talking to Giuseppe Fidanzati, who is only under investigation. He is one of the sons of the boss of Acquasanta, Gaetano Fidanzati, who died today, who had made Milan the operational base of drug trafficking. Even the son of the Mafia chief has served a sentence for drug trafficking.

The two referred to a "boy" from Castelvetrano, identified as Francesco Guttadauro, grandson of the heart of Matteo Messina Denaro, who had been arrested. In particular Fidanzati remembered a meeting that took place at the station of Trapani with "Iddu" (he ed) who had been accompanied on board a Mercedes by a certain "Mimmu". It is not clear if "Iddu" refers to Guttadauro or, as investigators suspect, to the super-fugitive Messina Denaro.
