Among the usual cosplayer of Lucca Comics & Games 2019 also a small group of boys dressed up presented Nazi soldiers, moreover with rather well-kept uniforms in detail.
The boys, all decidedly young, marched through the streets of the city with high-ranking Nazi officers, complete with a band with swastika on the arm and flags with the classic symbols, between Celtic and hooked crosses. This obviously caused one reaction disdain in some present and by local political bodies and personalities.
Returning probably to the desire to use cosplay for a goliardic occasion, the subject certainly surpasses the limits of good taste as well as probably also representing a real crime, assuming the contours of the apology of Nazism.
The Municipality of Lucca and Lucca Crea – organizer of the festival – commented claiming to distance themselves and condemning the gesture, as stated in the statement also reported by the official Lucca Comics & Games account on Facebook:
The Municipality of Lucca and Lucca Crea – the organizer of the festival – keep their distance and condemn the behavior of the two boys who appeared in the video uploaded on the net yesterday, offensive not only for Lucca Comics & Games and all its audience, but above all for the memory historical of our territory. The incident, a specter of intolerance and barbarism that does not belong to us in any way, has nothing to do with the festival or the community cosplay nor with any historical re-enactment. No event of the event, no partner, no collateral activity is involved in this gesture of the two boys.
A clear condemnation to the episode also by the mayor Alessandro Tambellini of the Municipality of Lucca, who reiterates that the episode is not "in any way related to the festival, nor to the community cosplay, nor to any historical re-enactment", referring to moreover, as security then removed the boys from the area. "We also recall that the theme to which the festival is dedicated this year is Becoming Human, a strong appeal to rediscover our human side, to enhance closeness, feelings and tolerance".
In a video published by Il Fatto Quotidiano we see a moment of disputes related to the initiative, which took place rather close to the location where part of our editorial staff is located within Lucca Comics.
