Opposition Senator Jeanine Anez has declared herself president of Bolivia taking the place that was for more than 13 years of Evo Morales, forced to resign on army pressure last Sunday.

Following the resignation of the country's main institutional positions, and as vice president of the Senate, Anez was identified as the person who was supposed to become interim president and lead Bolivia towards new elections. His appointment, however, was much contested and was defined by Morales, who has been in Mexico since Thursday, as a "coup": the parliamentary session that was supposed to appoint the new president, in fact, did not register the quorum necessary to make such an important decision, given the boycott of the parliamentarians of Morales's party.

Anez said: "Faced with the definitive absence of the president and vice-president (Alvaro Garcia Linera, who had also resigned along with Morales, ed), and as the Constitution establishes, as president of the Senate, I immediately assume the presidency of the was foreseen by the constitutional order and I undertake to take all the necessary measures to pacify the country ". Anez had become president of the Senate after the resignation of Adriana Salvatierra, also from the party of Morales.

Jeanine Anez, 52, is the second woman to become president of Bolivia, after Lidia Gueiler, who remained head of the government for only 244 days between 1979 and 1980. Anez is originally from the city of Trinidad, in the province of Beni, is a lawyer and from 2006 to 2008 he was a member of the constituent assembly charged with writing the new constitution. It is part of the opposition Democratic Union party and in recent years has been very critical with Morales, especially towards the intention of the former president to obtain a fourth presidential term despite the constitution providing for a maximum of two.

Meanwhile, the situation in Bolivia continues to be very chaotic: Morales supporters claim that a coup is underway against the former president and the clashes between demonstrators with different ideas and demonstrators and protesters continue on the streets of many cities in the country. police.

Morales's resignation had come under pressure from the army and after three weeks of anti-government demonstrations across the country. The protests had begun following the dissemination of the results of the last presidential elections, held last October and won by Morales but contested by the oppositions. According to the opposition parties, in fact, the preliminary election data had been manipulated to prevent Morales from going to the ballot with Carlos Mesa, his main challenger. Morales was a candidate for his fourth presidential term, despite the fact that the Bolivian Constitution only allows two. His resignation had arrived on Sunday, under pressure from the opposition, the protesters and the security forces, which removed support for Morales and his government.
