Near the PolyU campus there is a barracks of the Chinese People's Liberation Army: the soldiers, who on Saturday had made a quick sortie in a T-shirt and shorts to remove the guerrilla debris, remained indoors yesterday. But they were in order of action, watching the clashes with binoculars. The fear that cleaning on Saturday may have been a rehearsal general rehearsal.

The siege continued for hours. At sunset an armored vehicle was set on fire and the driver drove it in reverse with the crew on board. In the evening the police defined the situation as rioting, ordered the eviction and threatened the use of weapons against the rioters. When the siege took place at night, the defenders of the Polytechnic set fire to a pedestrian bridge to stop the agents who wanted to surround them. Dozens of arrests are reported, only a core of a couple of hundred defenders remained on campus after one o'clock in the morning, awaiting the final assault.
