GREAT SNOWFALLS in the Alps, the SNOW has also arrived at low altitude

Abundant snowfalls have covered the Alps, although now they have attenuated above all in the central-western area where they have become weaker and sporadic. Above 1500 meters, the thickness of fresh snow has reached accumulations even higher than 50 cm from Upper Piedmont to Friuli.

A lot of snow fell also on various famous tourist resorts, including Cortina d'Ampezzo. The abundant snow should allow the start of the ski season already this Sunday, with the opening of the first lift at Passo Falzarego.

The snow continues to fall on the eastern Alpine arc generally over 1000 meters, but at times it has pushed further down into the more intense showers on the most sheltered valley floors thanks to the presence of local cold air pockets that have allowed the flakes to go very low.

In some areas of the valley floor of Trentino the snow in the morning had gone up to 500-600 meters. On Ossola, in Upper Piedmont, even for brief moments it has deposited the snow always in the hills, with flakes that have been glimpsed as far as the 200-meter mark.

We reiterate that these were entirely local phenomena, dictated by the "miracles" of the alpine orography with the entrapment of pockets of cold air in the low layers. In general, the snow level was generally higher, above 1000-1200 meters.

In addition to the Alps, the snow made its appearance as expected also in the Northern Apennines, especially on the Tuscan-Emilian sector as early as 1500 meters. The first seasonal snowflakes also affected the Gennargentu in Sardinia, close to the Bruncuspina peak.

For the weekend the snowfall will grant a truce in the Alps, even if the last sprinkles of snow will involve the eastern alpine sector in the first part of Saturday, without excluding flakes still below 1000 meters.
