The differentiated? Only citizens do it in Rome, at least judging by what Filippo Roma and Marco Occhipinti discovered during the fifth episode of their inquiry "La Grande Monnezza"

We were inside one of the largest waste collection centers in the capital, Campo Boario, which serves the city center and some peripheral areas. And there, with our cameras, we discovered something that has incredible: paper, plastic and glass are collected and mixed without any criteria, completely frustrating the efforts of citizens and the advantages of waste disposal.

Properly differentiate the garbage in fact, as the Romans already do, allows you to burn less waste and therefore to pollute the environment much less. But also to spend less on disposal and to make money from recycling, and therefore to lower waste taxes on the Romans.

Filippo Roma is accompanied around the city by an operator of Ama, who explains: "There are vans that unload the garbage inside the compactors. Now we are going to see also the compactor that concerns plastic and cardboard, they are always inside the yard ". In theory the trucks should differentiate the waste but this does not seem to happen: "They should, then instead or not a thing works or another does not work … And they download everything into the same compactor".

Another operator adds: "The organic recyclable material, glass, paper, most of the time they are thrown into the truck of undifferentiated, either because the body is full, and it's been two days that they don't change it, you want because the van does not work and therefore it is easier to download here. Many times there are difficulties because the van is too low, because it crashes under and the alternative is undifferentiated ”.

"So in fact recycling is done or not done?" Asks the Hyena and the answer leaves no doubt: "Not like it should be done, absolutely not".

A system, they make us understand, that it is not free initiative of the operators: "It was enough that a van did not work the axle to unload or it had nothing to do because there they do that they are too high that the team leaders told you 'okay goes to download into the undifferentiated, because they are a little lower. Then he also discharged himself for a stupidity inside the undifferentiated". And this, the workers add, "happens every day".

Filippo Roma hears another operator of Ama by telephone, confirming this bad habit.

"Can it happen for example that you go to Campo Boario you have the glass, and instead of dumping it in the bin you throw it in the truck, a compactor?" "Yes, oh God, not if it could, but they told us team leaders, just take off my glass and go to another place on the street, I did look you can't do, it's not like you can throw a glass of glass, but at other times if they order then to unload it, just take off the glass that must be empty to do another service, that is the meaning is these cocks, excuse the term, of the differentiated, enough that we remove the glass from the streets ". "But in the end in Rome do you differentiate do you or not?" Insists Filippo Roma. "Look, Yes and no. No and yes. Here is total confusion".

Indeed, this great confusion is also documented by Le Iene with our camera, when we sneak into those boxes. "This is the cardboard, but if you go to see there is not only the cardboard. This is glass. In practice … here aluminum, plastic … paper plates … "

Then we move to the compactor dedicated to the undifferentiated, but inside we find everything: organic, glass, plastic bags …

We decide to do the test of 9 and place two hidden cameras, one that frames the compactors where the undifferentiated garbage must be unloaded and another that takes up the blue boxes where only the separated waste should be unloaded, ie paper, plastic or glass.

We do it on a Friday, which in theory is the day of giving the card. Our camera frames one of the compactors dedicated to undifferentiated. At 11.08am an Ama pickup truck arrives, from which we see a bit of everything fall: envelopes of all kinds, including the classic bags that contain undifferentiated garbage.

Just an hour later, at 11.58, still in the same compactor, the truck overturns the waste of paper and at 13:28 another arrives, which unloads undifferentiated waste.

It could be that they had problems that day and then we try the next day.

It's Saturday: at 14.07 an Ama pickup truck, loaded with unsorted waste, with bags of various types and colors, approaches the compactor, unloading all its contents inside. Just twenty minutes later, at 2.28 pm, another van full of paper arrives. The card should be differentiated, and instead it is thrown into the same truck where the non-recyclable waste had previously been decanted.

We are going back again the following Saturday. It's 11.45 am when we see an Ama van, which has collected paper and cardboard, unload in the compactor: so far everything is regular. Only later, at 1.59 pm, in the same truck the truck cleaning the streets is emptied, with all kinds of waste.

When we go to ask for explanations of this absurd "mischione", in that very center that we have kept under observation, they do not take it very well and also try to tear the microphone from our hands. But first they give us the "ignorant", categorically denying that they do their job badly: "Look, it's really impossible”.
