In Austin, Mercedes scored twice, with Bottas, first, and Hamilton, second, champion. Let's see how the Anglo-German house dominated the opponents
The Austin GP consecrated Lewis Hamilton which, thanks to the second place, has reached his sixth title of world champion. It was a truly triumphant day for Mercedes, who won with Bottas, able to get the better of his teammate thanks to a different strategy. On the lowest step of the podium it was hoisted Max Verstappen that, for the whole race, it didn't seem to have the rhythm to undermine the two Mercedes. The Dutch pilot, due to a contact in the first bends, he played the entire race with the front wing and the bottom damaged and these factors certainly have affected lap times and in tire management.

Only the first Ferrari of Leclerc, but the remedy that was remedied was really so much. The Finnish driver managed to precede Albon with the second Red Bull. Vettel was forced to retire in the early stages of the race when, suddenly, the upper triangle of the right rear suspension. Daniel Ricciardo won the "GP of the others" thanks to the sixth in front of the two McLarens of Norris is Sainz. The points area is completed by Nico Hulkenberg, ninth, in front of Perez which was triggered by the pitlane.

Why did Mercedes differentiate the strategy?

Before the race, Pirelli indicated how faster strategy that with single stop with departure with the averages and subsequently the hard up to the checkered flag. The race has upset these plans also because thetire wear it was higher than expected. This was also due to the'Departure time which was anticipated compared to free practice and qualifications. The asphalt temperature was higher than in previous sessions and this created some more headaches to the strategists of the various teams.

The choice of Mercedes to bring up double stop the race of Bottas was due to Red Bull's decision to anticipate Verstappen's stop to seek the Finnish driver's undercut and to alleviate the pressure that Hamilton was putting against the Dutchman. Verstappen was close enough to Bottas and the choice of the undercut, in the case Mercedes had not responded immediately, could work. For this reason, the Anglo-German team immediately called back to the Bottas pits and confirmed the position, albeit with a very small margin.

For Hamilton the chances of winning were very low due to the bad qualification made by the six-time world champion. The only chance of seeking victory was to set the win race to a stop trying to make the medium last as long as possible and reach the finish line with the hard. The Anglo-German team has risked this strategy also because, behind them, the Ferrari pressure was practically non-existent given the lack of pace of Leclerc.

The only stop, in the end, did not pay at the end of the race's success but it was decisive to get second place ahead of Red Bull Verstappen. Hamilton, in the second stint, managed the tires in an excellent way but was unable to keep up behind him Bottas with tires much cooler than yours.

How was the Ferrari weekend?

For the Ferrari the American trip was a real disaster. In qualifying the speed was pretty good, but in the race Leclerc, has never managed to run on similar times to Mercedes is Red Bull. The American weekend was already complicated during the FP3, when, a technical problem to the endothermic engine of the car of Leclerc had forced the mechanics to mount the specification 2, which, compared to the 3 is less powerful. Things went well in the race even worse given that Vettel was forced to retire for a suspension failure and, Leclerc, arrived at the finish line with a 52 "gap to the winner. Hard to say what didn't work even though, looking at the SF90 on the track, it seemed to have some light trim problems and a great difficulty in bringing the front tires up to temperature.

Leclerc's first stint, with medium tires, was really bad since, given in hand, he turned with a step over 3 heads over a second. Leclerc also seemed to be very surprised by this lack of rhythm: " I don't understand what happened in the first stint. We must understand because I lacked grip to the front left. I struggled a lot like in Hungary. The situation, however, was different because I suffered from the first to the last lap there, while here I don't understand why the first stint was so negative ”.

With the other sets of tires things have improved, in fact, with the hard he succeeded, as can be seen from the graph below, in turning over the same times as Bottas and Verstappen.

At the end of the race, to try to get the point of fast ride, the Maranello team opted for the soft turning with a step of 2 tenths better than Verstappen and Bottas.
