Changing a logo is sometimes not just a simple aesthetic issue. the case of Facebook that announced the new design of the company name to make the difference between it and the social network with the same name clearer and more evident. The giant of Mark Zuckerberg in fact expands far beyond the single platform given that also includes Instagram that WhatsApp. An aspect that appears obvious but that according to some surveys in reality only a minority of people, at least in the United States, knows.
The idea of the logo also stems from this need for greater clarity and for this reason at the time of login in the two other applications will be present the updated version of the writing "from Facebook", introduced under the track only during this year. In addition to greater visibility, thanks to capital letters, the different shades used will immediately catch the eye: green in the case of WhatsApp and violet for Instagram.
A larger drawing
But the reading of this change goes beyond that officially communicated. What emerges an increasing interconnection between the three applications, which culminated with the announcement last April of the desire to create a single communication environment shared between Instagram, WhatsApp and Messenger. A design that is increasingly delineated as a process of centralization.
And looking further back, it was already clear that the farewell of the two founders of Instagram, Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger, was linked to an ever-decreasing independence guaranteed to the social network acquired by Facebook in 2012. But first it had already been the turn of step back from the founders of WhatsApp, Brian Acton and Jan Koum, in disagreement with Mark Zuckerberg's projects.
Complicated moment
A change of logo can reveal some strategies in the medium-long term, but certainly can't solve the problems Facebook is in, as The Verge ironically commented. In recent months the social media is not doing very well between the opening of antitrust investigations for the incorrect use of user data and the growing political pressure to decrease the power and size of society. Without forgetting the general skepticism towards the project to launch the Libra cryptocurrency that led Zuckerberg himself to appear before the Congress, proving to be unconvincing.
