Explosive cyclone is about to climb the Tyrrhenian Sea

We promised that we would continue to monitor the weather with extreme attention and here we are, ready to update you on what has become a dangerous Mediterranean cyclone. A tropical-like cyclone (in TLC technical jargon) which has benefited from the contact with the warm waters surrounding the North African coasts.

Yesterday, as you will remember, we highlighted the confluence between the cold air at high altitude and the hot humid air from Libya. In that area the ideal conditions were created for enormous thermal contrasts and consequent storm supercells. Thunderstorms that hit Sicily heavily, thunderstorms that are currently severely affecting southern Italy.

New SNOW arriving in the Alps, snowfall is expected even at low altitudes

The storm lump is clearly visible from the satellite image, an image that among other things gives us the opportunity to see the eye of the cyclone (located near southern Sicily).

The question that many will be asking is the following: what to expect for the next few hours? Cards in hand we expect the cyclone to rise on the Tyrrhenian Sea, in fact the high resolution models confirm a severe deterioration – from the very first afternoon – from Lazio upwards. Worsening that could bring new thunderstorms, storms, violent gusts of wind.

STRONG WINDS on the Italian seas, gusts over 100 km per hour

Worsening that in all likelihood will result in heavy snowfall in the central eastern areas of the Alps, where the snow level could favor important accumulations already at an altitude of 1200 meters. We are talking about accumulations that, at the end of the event, could even reach 1 meter (from 1400-1500 meters upwards).

Potentially explosive situation, we repeat, a situation that could even replicate over the course of the weekend. It is premature to talk about it, but the mathematical forecasting models suggest a new cyclonic assault whose effects will be evaluated step by step.
