Not even the time to enjoy an exciting qualification and the net path of the group of Roberto Mancini that touches already throw the look ahead and start to worry about what will be ai Europeans. The question is very simple: despite the inclusion of the Azzurri among the top players in the tournament, including "territorial" constraints, other national ranking positions and political limitations, the risk, even too remote, is to end up in a dramatic group with the world champions of the France and the European champions of the Portugal. Unbelievable but, alas, true.
Fabio Licari explains it well this morning in the Gazzetta dello Sport pages. The point is this: tonight we will know the name of the last qualified to the Europeans between Hungary, Wales and Slovakia. After that the picture will be completed in the play-offs of the Nations League of March to reach the 24 teams scheduled for this edition. At the moment the bands are so composed:
FIRST BAND: Italy, Belgium, England, Ukraine, Spain (safe) and Germany (a peer against Northern Ireland is enough)
SECOND RANGE: France (which could eventually take over from Germany), Switzerland, Croatia, Poland and, in all likelihood, the Netherlands and Austria
THIRD RANGE: Russia, Portugal, Turkey, Denmark, Sweden and the Czech Republic
FOURTH BAND: Hungary (or Wales or Slovakia), Finland and the four that will pass for the playoffs)
It is therefore easy to deduce the real risks for Mancini and his national team: France (or Germany), Croatia or Holland from the second band, Portugal from the third. To this must be added the territorial and political constraints mentioned above which, in fact, close a group for three-quarters. The Belgium, in fact, it will be included in the group of Russia is Denmark because St. Petersburg and Copenhagen are two coupled seats and Ukraine cannot play against Russia because of political disputes between the two nations.
