Drama in Venice, but nobody talks about the South

"Venice is in the drama, but not only Venice. Other cities and regions have been overwhelmed by bad weather. I think of Basilicata with Matera – the European capital of culture, in photos (the one published in the post on Facebook, ed) -, I think of Puglia , to Calabria, to Sicily, and nobody talks about it.. The situation in Venice remains critical, after high water brought the city to its knees in the last week. Today a peak of 160 centimeters of tide is expected for 13. At 10.25 am, according to the Tide Center, the observed value at the Lido is 142 centimeters, at Punta Salute 122 centimeters. 280 Civil Protection volunteers have arrived in the lagoon city, also from Padua, Treviso and Rovigo. But the damage caused by bad weather is also being felt from Rome downwards: in 11 other regions for today a warning for hydrogeological risk has been declared and the Undersecretary to the Prime Minister Fraccaro said that the government is ready to recognize the state of emergency also to other regions of the Center-South. Also in Florence the Arno river is at risk of flooding. And in the capital the strong wind of this night has necessitated over 200 interventions by the Fire Brigade, especially for fallen trees, unsafe branches and water infiltration in buildings.

"They do not exist – he added – Serie B regions, we must deal with every single Italian, every single family, every single worker, every single trader. Just yesterday – continued Di Maio – I heard the mayor of the town of Ispica, in Sicily. People died in that area too. We pray for them and for those who are suffering at this time.
