The situation is catastrophic, with almost 100 registered fires, temperatures up to 37 ° C, hot and dry winds that blow at 90 km per hour spreading the flames quickly.
The districts most at risk are those close to the wooded areas but the fire brigade warned that no area is completely safe precisely because of the strong winds that could carry dangerous embers at great distances, capable of lighting secondary fires.
The whole city is in a state of emergency, with about 100 thousand homes at risk, in what has been called the most dangerous week the nation has ever seen.
Four hundred schools have been closed, while nursing homes and care centers for the elderly are ready for the worst and are reviewing the evacuation plans.
In addition to Sydney, other cities like Coffs Harbor and Nambucca Heads are preparing for a disaster, because fires will continue to spread along the coast for days.
The authorities have alerted citizens living in the areas most at risk urging them to leave their homes as soon as possible: time is short because the flames are spreading very quickly and there are not enough means to fight fires.
The gravity of the situation could even make too dangerous for firefighters try to extinguish the flames.
About 400 firefighters they are busy taming fires from high in bad visibility due to smoking.
Fires produce so much smoke that quality of Brisbane air is three times worse than that of Pechinor.
Furthermore fire behavior is unpredictable and at the moment, with about 100 active outbreaks, the only way to defend oneself from the flames is to escape.
Meanwhile, looters are taking advantage of the situation and are entering homes to steal valuables abandoned by people on the run.
From last Friday to today, fires in the north-east of the state have already caused three victims and more than 100 injured – including 20 firefighters – in addition to destroy over 150 homes and more than a million hectares of forest and agricultural land.
The fires that are devastating the Australian east coast are worse than usual due to the particularly dry climate and drought. At the end of last October the woods near Sydney started to burn at cause of lightning which hit a particularly dry area. The flames affected the wooded area, destroying the trees and causing the death of hundreds of koalas and invaluable environmental damage.
Because of the strong winds the flames have become uncontrollable and these days the fire has reached the inhabited areas, with disastrous consequences for the population.
