No more plastic bags to take out of your luggage before the airport checks. The Sea, a company that manages the Malpensa and Linate airports, is preparing a series of innovations to redefine the rules to follow before embarking, partially restoring the model followed before the September 11th 2001 attacks.

Among the novelties, the possibility of placing liquids, even over 100 ml, in hand luggage, as well as PCs, tablets and other electronic devices. The goal is to reduce the queues at the gate and ensure greater comfort for passengers: the process has already started.

We read in the Corriere della Sera:

First, automated lines will be installed for carry-on baggage checks that will allow you to manage a higher number of passengers, processing up to 250 people per hour. Secondly, which is the most innovative for Italy and represents a revolution in hand luggage processing, Eds-Cb (Explosives detection systems for cabin baggage) with Tac technology will be installed instead of the traditional x-ray . They will be operational at Linate by the summer and by the end of 2020 at Malpensa (where they are testing two). Thanks to this novelty, the passenger must no longer remove the devices or liquids from their luggage.

Technology is the key word for this revolution at the airport.

Another novelty will be the Frictionless journey. The technology for facial biometric recognition will be used to make passengers' access inside the terminal more fluid and faster in all the various control steps up to self boarding, automatic boarding. Because in the same gates cameras will be mounted with biometric seamless functionality. Whoever arrives at the airport for the first time will have to go to the dedicated enrollment kiosks: a registration to associate biometric data with an electronic passport or identity card (once the security and privacy issues have been overcome, the airport should keep the data for one year).

No more operators at check-in: the self bag drop from 2020 will guarantee online procedures, and the passenger will be able to independently check his baggage, labeling it.

Thanks to an app, help also arrives for people with less sense of orientation: on their smartphone the shortest way to reach the desired destination will be indicated.

When using big data and analytics systems to offer more services to travelers, great attention must be paid to issues related to cybersecurity: airports are considered extremely sensitive areas and the more access technologies they use, the more the risks for hackers increase find possible vulnerabilities. One aspect on which, according to Sea, major investments are being concentrated. In addition to the new projects, in fact, the company invests 15-16 million in technology and innovation.
