Young Generation Z (born after 1993), who grew up with digital technology, are even more interested in traditional professions as physicians, lawyers, teachers or psychologists than in emerging professions.
This is at least one of the findings that emerges from the survey conducted by Academos, specializing in e-mentoring, to 1268 young Quebecers aged 14 to 26, in December 2018, by email.
"It seems that careers in cybersecurity, artificial intelligence or sustainable development, for example, that are booming, have not yet found their way into the imagination of young generation Z", can we read in the report released Tuesday.
Regarding the feeling that inspires them in the job market, 25% say they experience excitement, but it is followed closely by stress (22%) and anxiety (14%).
One of the negative points that emerges from the survey is that 52% of respondents say that the school prepares them badly or has poorly prepared them for the job market.
Indeed, nearly 27% of respondents believe that the lessons are too theoretical, 23% consider that they are poorly accompanied in their orientation process and 17% believe that the courses offered are not representative of the market reality work.
entrepreneurship
On the other hand, entrepreneurship, which is gaining more and more popularity in Quebec, ranks among the top 10 most popular professions among young people (see table).
According to the report, intentions and entrepreneurial initiatives have tripled overall in the province. About 37% of 14- to 26-year-olds would like to own their own business. However, they refuse to sacrifice their family life and hobbies for the benefit of their careers, regardless of their choice.
"Certainly, the young generation Z want to succeed their career, but not at the expense of their well-being. They are ready to work and to excel, as long as everything is fulfilled in pleasure, "adds the authors.
In their eyes, money ranks only sixth in the list of values. The pleasure, the health and the well-being, the working climate, the surpassing of oneself happen before both men and women.
Born with digital technology, Generation Z expects to continue learning once in the job market.
"Young people today are hyperstimulated, they constantly have their nose in their cell or their computer. It is therefore a generation that fears boredom and wants to be stimulated at work, otherwise it will simply leave his job to find a more exciting, "says Diane Pacom, sociologist who is quoted in the report.
