The world rugby calendar in Japan is turned upside down by the arrival of Typhoon Hagibis, which should hit Tokyo and its surroundings this weekend. It will be accompanied by winds to 250 km / h and torrential rains, reports L'Equipe.

The organizers have decided Thursday to cancel some matches, such as England-France and New Zealand – Italy scheduled for Saturday.

In contrast, the match Ireland-Samoa, also scheduled for Saturday in Fukuoka, southern Japan, was maintained, as the meeting Australia-Georgia Friday in Shizuoka.

The cancellations were announced by Alan Gilpin (2nd from the left), director of the World Cup held in Japan. Keystone

Italy eliminated

According to the rules, in the event of a match cancellation, each team should be awarded two points (0-0 draw). The French are already qualified for the quarters. The cancellation of New Zealand – Italy leads to the qualification of the All Blacks at the expense of Italy in Pool B.

For Sunday, no decision has yet been made. The organizers are waiting to see how the typhoon will evolve and the damage it has caused.

A first

This is the first match cancellation in the history of the Rugby World Cup, created in 1987.

At ten months of the Tokyo Olympics (July 24-August 9, 2020), this cancellation will relaunch questions about Japan's ability to host major international competitions due to natural conditions (earthquakes) and climate (typhoons, strong humid heat in summer).
