The debut of the new Volkswagen Golf 8 2020 brought with it a completely revised style for the frontal area but also new elements that characterize and update the experience of a Golf on board. Basically what was already seen in the premium with the Class A W177 and BMW 1 Series 2020 MBUX is also brought on board the new generation of the Wolfsburg myth with a more "generalist" style, typically Golf.

The basis for all this is the Digital Cockpit digital instrumentation with 10.25-inch standard display, an Infotainment system (8.25-inch touchscreen with online connection) and the multi-function steering wheel. Thanks to the integration between Digital Cockpit and Infotainment system, a new digital architecture has been achieved. On request it is possible to further extend the digital equipment available to the driver with two 10-inch Infotainment systems. Associated with the Discover Pro navigation system, the digital instrumentation forms the so-called Innovision Cockpit. In addition, a Windshield Head Up Display is available. In this type of display the information is projected directly onto the windscreen, making it visible in front of the driver.

Even the light and visibility functions have been redesigned, combined and made more intuitive: the lights and the heating of the windscreen and rear window are now controlled by a digital keyboard to the left of the instrument panel. The center console also stands out for its improved ergonomics: in particular, thanks to the shift by wire shift lever of the DSG dual clutch transmissions, now considerably smaller, this area is now more tidy and clean. This image is reinforced by the new Imperial console; also in this case the control is digitized, with touch cursor for the optional panoramic roof. For a perfect onboard sound you can rely on an optional 400 Watt Harman Kardon sound system.

All Golf infotainment systems are paired with an Online Connectivity Unit (OCU) equipped with an eSIM card. The OCU and the eSIM card allow access to a constantly growing range of online functions and services provided by the Volkswagen We brand ecosystem. Of these, on the new Golf they can be used as standard: the range contained in We Connect (unlimited use of time) and in We Connect Plus (free use in Europe for one or three years). The company We Connect Fleet, a service for the digital management of the vehicle fleet, was specifically developed for companies.

We Connect includes the Digital Key (based on the equipment, unlocking / locking and starting of the Golf using a compatible smartphone), Calling for roadside assistance, Vehicle status, Doors and lights, Automatic accident reporting, Vehicle status report, Data Service, Parking position and Service deadline planning. We Connect Plus depending on the equipment includes, in addition to all the We Connect functions, also Notification relating to the area, Speed notification, Acoustic and flashing light, Online burglar alarm, Online auxiliary heating, Online autonomous ventilation, Locking and unlocking, Hours of departure (on models with plug-in hybrid engines), Air conditioning (on models with hybrid engines), Refill (on models with plug-in hybrid engines), Information on online traffic plus hazard notifications, Route calculation online, Fuel dispensers and charging stations, Online map update, Parking, Online POI search, Online voice command, We Deliver (transform Golf into delivery and service delivery point), Webradio, Media Streaming and WLAN Hotspot.

In the future the smartphone will become the vehicle key. And even in this case, We Connect acts as an interface. Through the We Connect app, compatible Samsung smartphones will be configured for the purpose and will receive authorization via the Infotainment system and only once as the main user via vTAN. To use the smartphone as a digital key, a cellular connection is not required. To open, simply hold the smartphone near the door handle as with the Keyless Access keyless opening and start system. To start the engine, the smartphone must be stored in the central console (special coupling box). It will also be possible to send the Digital Key to friends or family members so that they can use their smartphone as a key.

Custom adjustments are stored directly in the Golf and on request via cloud to be able to recall them when the driver changes or the vehicle is changed. Depending on the equipment, the settings of the Innovation Cockpit, the position of the seat, the exterior mirrors, the climate control, the ambient light and the Coming / Leaving Home lights are memorized.

The new online Infotainment instruments and systems merge into a single digital cockpit with some command islands with touch buttons and cursors and an optional Windshield Head Up Display system. Complete digitalisation, in addition to presenting touch surfaces and a natural voice command, allows an extremely self-explanatory and therefore intuitive command. The systems are networked not only with each other, but also with the world outside of Golf through an Online Connectivity Unit (OCU). The standard OCU with integrated eSIM connects with the We Connect and We Connect Plus online functions and services. Just as an example: thanks to the online connection, navigation becomes interactive, because the points of interest (POI) along the route now come automatically displayed with information, such as the phone number to reserve a table at the restaurant via smartphone and Bluetooth interface. Furthermore, the digital interface can be widely customized to adapt to the driver's personal taste.

Moving on to the driving assistance systems, the new Golf can proceed with assisted driving up to 210 km / h, also using Car2X communication, which warns in advance about possible "arrival" dangers. The Travel Assist allows assisted driving on motorways up to 210 km / h without the driver having to steer, accelerate or brake actively. Comfort and driving safety improve, especially on long journeys. The new Golf is the first Volkswagen model capable of connecting to the surrounding environment as standard: the Car2X function uses information from other vehicles in the vicinity up to 800 meters and signals from the road traffic infrastructure, to warn the driver and transmit these reports to other Car2X vehicles as well. Collective intelligence now becomes a reality. This is the beginning of a new phase of road safety, since in a short time Volkswagen will make standard Car2X signals become standard through high-spread models of the caliber of Golf.

An additional safety advantage will also be offered to the new MATRIX IQ.LIGHT LED headlights and their partially interactive lighting functions.
