US President Donald Trump on Thursday hailed the ceasefire in Syria, saying he had deliberately decided to let the Turks and Kurds get into this fierce battle because they were "like two kids"who needed to fight.

"It was not conventional, which I did. I said, they need to fight a bit. Like two kids, we let them fight a little, and then we separate them", he said at a meeting in Dallas, Texas.

Brett McGurk, former special envoy of the US presidency to the anti-IS coalition (Islamic State group), ruled the president's remarks "obscene and ignorant".

"200,000 innocent internally displaced persons, hundreds of dead, credible war crimes information, escaping IS prisoners, and the United States evacuating and bombarding their own positions or yielding them to the Russians. Two kids fighting?", he said on Twitter.

"So they fought a few days, and it was pretty brutal", he added, before stressing that"not a drop of American blood was paid".

Trump facilitated the Turkish offensive against Syrian Kurds by withdrawing US troops from northeastern Syria.

The week-long battle left more than 500 dead, mostly Kurds, including dozens of civilians, and 300,000 displaced, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.
