Thousands of angry protesters took to the streets of Barcelona on Monday [October 14th] after the conviction of nine Catalan independence leaders to prison firm for their role in the attempt of secession of Catalonia in 2017. They then joined the Barcelona airport to try to block it.

Riot police repeatedly charged hundreds of militants who tried to enter the terminal. The latter responded by throwing stones and trash on the police. According to the emergency services, 37 people were injured, including 34 at the airport.

A total of 108 flights were canceled, according to airport manager Aena. Many travelers were forced to leave their vehicles on the highway to reach the terminal on foot with their suitcases. In the evening, thousands of demonstrators joined the center of the Catalan metropolis, for a rally planned for several days. "The streets will always be ours"they shouted, brandishing separatist flags.

In recent days, the Spanish government of Pedro Sanchez had sent police reinforcements, fearing events violent. A platform dubbed "Democratic Tsunami" had already called on the militants to demonstrate and block the airport in case of condemnation of the independence leaders. Nine of them were sentenced to pains ranging from nine to twelve years in prison by the Court supreme Spanish. Heavy penalties but well below the 25 years claimed by the prosecution for "rebellion".
