Typhoon Hagibis, which hit Japan between Saturday and Sunday, killed nearly 70 people, according to a new record given Tuesday by the public television channel NHK. Fifteen people are still missing.

More than 100,000 rescuers were still looking for survivors in the flooded areas Tuesday, affected by deadly landslides, triggered by the "unprecedented" rains that accompanied Hagibis, according to Japanese meteorologists.

The balance sheet had grown steadily on Monday. In its latest count based on information collected in the field by its journalists, NHK gave a total close to 70 people Tuesday at midday.

Precipitations on Tuesday morning and others planned in the evening posed a new threat to residents, complicating the work of soldiers, firefighters, police and coastguards.

"The heavy rains have raised the level of rivers and weakened the land in places," warned the government spokesman. "We call on locals not to relax their attention and maintain maximum vigilance," he added.
