SOCHI. At the end of the 7-hour talks in Sochi in Russia, Vladimir Putin is Recep Erdogan have issued a joint press conference in which both said they were satisfied with the agreement reached on the subject of Syria. "The Turkish president explained to me the reasons for the offensive – Putin began this way – I am convinced that the separatist sentiments in the North-East of Syria have been fomented from the outside. The region must be freed from the illegal foreign presence". He also referred to the fear that the ISIS prisoners, under the control of the Kurds in the North-East area and now under Turkish control, could take advantage of this to regain strength: "The terrorists do not draw strength from the Turkish operation". And then he stressed that the agreement with Erdogan is "of fundamental importance for the future of Syria".
It was established, in the memorandum of understanding signed by the two heads of state, that Turkey and Russia will conduct joint patrols up to 10 km within the Syrian territory beyond the Turkish border, to the east and west of the area where the Turkish operation in northern Syria, excluding Qamishli, the main Kurdish center in the area. "Today with Putin we have reached
a historic agreement – said Erdogan – for the fight against terrorism, the territorial integrity and political unity of Syria, and for the return of refugees ".The Kurdish fighters said they had concluded the withdrawal from the safe zone in the North East of Syria, in compliance with the agreement signed between the United States and Turkey. The head of the Syrian democratic forces (FDS), Mazlum Abdi, communicated in a letter to the American vice president, Mike Pence, who withdrew "all Ypg forces" from the area.

Meanwhile, pressure continues on the American president in favor of maintaining troops in Syria from Washington. "Donald Trump should leave US troops in Syria," Republican Senate majority leader Mitch McConnell said. The Republican stance comes on the day of the expiry on the ceasefire in Syrian territory and of the meeting between the Russian president and the Turkish counterpart.

The Syrian president Bashar al Assad, On a visit to the troops in the northwestern province of Idlib, pointed the finger at his Turkish counterpart: "Erdogan is a thief, he has stolen factories, wheat and oil and today steals the land".

Damascus authorities have specified that "President Assad has met members of the Syrian army on the front line in the city of Hbeit". Defeating the jihadist forces in the northwestern region of Idlib is the key, according to Assad, to end the 8-year civil war. "The battle of Idlib is the basis for resolving the chaos and terrorism in all other areas of Syria".
