Belgium is on yellow alert this Friday. As expected by the MRI, quite intense, stormy and windy showers have hit the country doing damage.

This was particularly the case in Anderlecht where the rain caused floods as shown by a video broadcast by our colleagues VTM (see here).

In Verviers, the uncomfortable weather was right of a tree on the quays of rue Jules Cerexhe. Traffic has been somewhat disrupted while waiting for firefighters to remove the hardwood. Late morning everything was back to normal.

Still in Verviers, but rue de l'Union this time, a tree fell and hit several cars. The City and the emergency services intervened to clear the fallen tree.

A quick point of the situation pushed the communal authorities to decide to cut down a second tree, classified, which seemed problematic. The operation will be carried out in the afternoon by a contractor.

The 1722 still active

The Federal Public Service Interior activated the number 1722 this morning, in anticipation of storms and heavy rain announced by the Royal Meteorological Institute (MRI).

This issue is intended for non-emergency interventions "when no life is not potentially in danger but a response from firefighters is necessary," says the Interior SPF in a statement. It can be composed for significant damage to the roof, for example, a cellar or a flooded public road, he illustrates.

When a life is dangerous, the number 112 remains of application.

Activation of 1722 is preventative when a storm or flood is announced. This activation does not bode the severity of the warning and the extent of the damage.

Weather forecast

This afternoon, the weather will remain very variable with showers in several places. These can always be locally intense, stormy and accompanied by wind gusts. Then, the showers will become scarce in the center and east of the country, with wider clearings. On the other hand, the tendency to showers will be maintained on the north-west of the territory. The maxima will be between 11 degrees in the highlands of the Ardennes and 14 or 15 degrees in Flanders. The wind will be moderate to often quite strong, and to the very strong coast, of south-west sector, with gusts of 50 to 70 km / h, or even more under heavy showers.

► The weather in your municipality

Tonight, the weather will become drier with first clearings but also sails of altitude. Then, the sky will gradually become very cloudy with, at the end of the night, rains from the south. Temperatures will fall between 7 degrees on the heights of the Ardenne and 11 degrees in Flanders. The wind will be moderate, and at first still quite strong at the coast; it will return to the south to southwest sector.

Tomorrow, saturday weather will be mostly cloudy with occasional rain or showers. It could be drier on the west during the afternoon. The maxima will be between 10 and 15 degrees, in a moderate wind, and at the coast sometimes quite strong, orienting themselves to the south-west sector.
