It's a 21-year-old story that has been solved in the department of Vienna. A man accused of raping a woman in 1998 was found through DNA analysis, found on a package of candy.
The events took place one evening in October 1998. The victim, a motorist, 21 years old at the time, stops on a road to the north of the department, because wooden logs block the passage. In reality it is a trap: a masked man then appears, ties her and rapes her in the car. He then fled on foot.
Heard as a witness in 1998
At the material time, the man is heard as a witness by the gendarmes, because he was the neighbor of the victim. But the survey does not succeed and two non-places are pronounced in 2001 and 2006.
But the case has recently rebounded in favor of taking evidence of a burglary committed this summer in a carpentry department of Vienne, said the prosecutor of Poitiers, Michel Garrandaux at a press conference.
The DNA found on a packet of sweets in 2019
By exploiting the DNA traces taken from the scene, the gendarmes realized that one of them, discovered on a candy wrapper, coincided with the DNA of an unknown rapist who had been on the drug database for over twenty years. data from the National Fingerprint File (FNAEG). This correspondence between the two unidentified DNAs led the gendarmes to relaunch the investigation into this rape.
The investigators' suspicions then turned to a man, now 67, the father of the burglar carpentry operator. He had never been disturbed until his arrest last October 9th.
In a few hours, the analysis of the DNA taken from the sexagenarian in custody, confirmed that it was his that was found in 1998. Faced with these comparisons of DNA, he acknowledged the facts of rape, said the prosecutor. The man was indicted and imprisoned.
