"Since the CAQ is in power, there is zero transparency to the MIFI, there is no publication, no statistics," says official opposition spokesman for immigration, Monsef Derraji.
Indeed, on the website of the Ministry of Immigration, Francization and Integration (MIFI), the last statistical bulletins on permanent immigration in Quebec concern the first six months of 2018. Before calls from our Parliamentary Office, the most recent statistics related to the first quarter of 2018.
Under the Couillard government, the data were updated every quarter, the PLQ says.
For Monsef Derraji, the release of up-to-date immigration data will shed light on the impacts of Legault's Bill 9.
"It will give us an idea of what the CAQ is doing with the regionalization of immigration, the speed with which Arrima works. It will help us find out if the gagged bill is working, if the MIFI is responding to the labor shortage, "says Derraji.
At the same time, the member denounces the slow response to requests for access to information from the same department.
"It is very slow. You have to be very patient to get an answer from the MIFI, "he laments.
Administrative changes
When asked about the reasons for this lack of recent data, the MIFI took several days to answer questions from our Parliamentary Office.
After several reminders and a call to the Minister of Immigration's office, the Department finally provided an answer just before dark. "I confirm that we are indeed behind schedule in the publication of our statistical reports, because of changes in our work processes in this sector in the Ministry," wrote a media relations officer, Émilie Vézina.
"However, I am informed that the statistical reports of the last few months will be published on our website shortly," she adds.
