New strong earthquake of magnitude 6.5 on the southern Philippines island of Mindanao, after that of two days ago. There are five deaths in the town of Makilala, Cotabato province, as confirmed by the authorities to the local media. The earthquake was recorded by the US geological service Usgs at 9.11 local time (2.11 in Italy) and was later confirmed by the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology.

The mayor is also among the victims

Among the victims of the earthquake also the mayor of the city of Makilala, involved in the collapse of the wall of a court where he was for work. The mayor of the town of Kidapawan, Joseph Evangelista, told the Dzmm radio of the collapse of an entire hotel, which however did not cause victims as the people fled at the first tremors. Significant damage to buildings was also recorded in Davao, 45 kilometers from the epicenter of the earthquake.

Only a few days ago another shock

It is the third earthquake over magnitude 6 that occurs in the area in the last two weeks, after the 6.6 magnitude occurred last Tuesday that had caused eight deaths, and the magnitude 6.4 that rocked the Philippines last October 16 causing 7 victims.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) has located the epicenter of today's earthquake 28 kilometers from Tulunan (Cotabato), the same city where the other two earthquakes originated. In the nearby town of Kidapawan, also in the province of Cotabato – where the earth felt trembling "with a destructive intensity" – a hotel collapsed, fortunately evacuated after the earthquake last Tuesday. The epicenter was located near Kisante, with a hypocenter at a depth of about 15 km.
