Iran, coached by Marc Wilmots, easily won Thursday's second qualifier for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar against Cambodia at home (14-0). The 'Tim-é melli' was supported by more than 3,500 women at the meeting, a first for more than thirty years in this country. Iran is currently first in its group with the maximum points (6/6).
The Iranian national team had no problem getting rid of Cambodia at home in front of more than 3,500 Iranian fans, unpublished, present at the Azadi stadium in Tehran in a block reserved for them.
Since the Islamic Revolution of 1979, Iranian women have been denied access to stadiums for men's football competitions, ostensibly to protect them from male rudeness. Usually selected by the authorities and in very small numbers, the Iranian women this time came en masse, on their own by buying their ticket themselves, to attend an official meeting of the national team.
FIFA has allowed this advance by putting pressure on the Iranian federation after the emotion aroused by the tragic death in September of a young woman, Sahar Khodayari, who burned himself after believing, according to the local press, that she was going to be sentenced to prison for attempting to enter a stadium.
